Hotham Sound Recordings 10th Anniversary Showcase

June 21, 2025 @ Salty Pear

In its continued endeavour to connect nature and technology, Groundwaves is excited to welcome the ambient electronic label Hotham Sound Recordings to the Salty Pear on Salt Spring Island. This unique concert experience celebrating Hotham Sound's 10th anniversary, underneath the canopy of a maple tree, features artists KR75, Midi Janitor, Playback Head, Dove Magic, and Sean Evans.

--
Hotham Sound Recordings is located in Vancouver, BC, on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh peoples. Their primary focus is on experimental electronic artists from the Pacific Northwest. There is a deep connection to Salt Spring within the label, which makes this anniversary celebration extra special.

The event will occur on the grounds at the Salty Pear. Guests are invited to join us at 4:00 pm for a wine bar pop-up serving A Sunday In August and treats by Francis Bread will be on site. The show begins a short walk away, under the large maple tree at 5:00 pm, with 20 - 25 minute showcase sets by the Hotham Sound label artists.

We encourage guests to bring a blanket and a jacket to sit on in case of a colder June solstice.

Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door (cash only).

Kids under 16 attend for free.

If you would like to attend but can't swing it financially, please email us at groundwaves.ssi@gmail.com

We're grateful to collaborate, create, and present on the shared, stolen, unceded, ancestral and traditional territories of Penelakut, Lamalcha, Hwitslum and other Hul’qumi’num speaking peoples, as well as the ceded territories of Tsawwassen First Nation, on what is now known as Salt Spring Island, British Columbia.

KR75
Kristen Roos (half of KR75) is an interdisciplinary artist and educator whose practice includes a wide range of mediums, including electronic music composition, sound design, sound installation, radio and transmission art, animation, printmaking, textiles, and media archaeology

Midi Janitor
Using only a scavenged MIDI keyboard and sounds plundered from a wide swath of archaic media (90’s sampler CDs, 80s VHS docs, 70s student films), musician Jonathan Orr creates startlingly accomplished slabs of thick, lo-fi electro that shimmer and pounce like nothing else on the Vancouver scene.

Playback Head
Since migrating to Canada in 2008, Brazilian multi-instrumentalist Alexandre Klinke has remained largely focused on the traditions of his home country, making music that blends folk rhythms with rock, pop, and electronic elements. Thirteen years later, the scope of his practice has expanded to include original soundtracks, field recordings, and sound & video art. With the birth of his two sons, his Canadian roots have grown deeper, and a new approach to music making has appeared - this time privileging timbre and sonic texture over melodic and harmonic development. Still utilizing his traditional instruments (piano, acoustic guitar, cavaquinho, viola caipira), Klinke began recording a series of minimal improvisations onto magnetic tape (both reel-to-reel and cassette) in late 2020. The sounds of the artist's home surroundings (birds outside the window, his children playing) seep continuously into the mix, as well as field recordings taken in his travels in Canada and Brazil.

Dove Magic

Lorri Rae Clark is a multidisciplinary artist and sound practitioner creating immersive sonic experiences through crystal singing bowls, vocals and synthesized tones. Her music serves as a meditative journey—one that blurs the boundaries between body, space, and sound Through intuition and energetic sensitivity, Lorri’s compositions act as portals to altered states of perception. Layered frequencies, drones, and harmonic overtones invite listeners into a deep state of presence, where inner landscapes expand and time begins to dissolve. Whether performed live or experienced in a spatialized audio environment, her work is designed to hold space for personal transformation, collective stillness and connection beyond the physical.

Sean Evans
Sean Evans is a Composer and Sound Design Artist based out of Vancouver, B.C. While he loves to make all types of music, his current practice finds him working in long-form ambient and drone pieces. Sean is always looking for that trance-like state right before you’re about to doze off, and see how long he can ride that out through texture and repetition. Having released music on Canadian labels Deep Sea Mining Syndicate and Hotham Sound, his latest release ‘Movements’ is currently in stores and online.
